Chapter Thirteen
Aching all over, Bruce stumbled to his car, parked two houses down. He clenched his fists, kicking a stray dog that trotted past. Gasping for breath, he reached his car, then fell to all fours. Get up and open the damn door. First he had to get his balance. His fingers sticky with blood, he grasped the door handle and tried to pull himself to his feet. The handle slipped from his grasp, and he fell back again. His eyes swollen, everything look hazy in the dark. Houses and cars faded in and out of his vision. Damn it, he couldnât even see straight!
Son of a bitch! Try one more time! Rising halfway, he pressed his hands to the hood of the car and stood. Slowly, every movement painful, he opened the car door and fell onto the seat. He slumped against the steering wheel, struggling for breath. His ribs ached like hell. Gingerly, he touched his left side and gasped with the pain. What if his ribs were broken?
Jennifer, the bitch! He wanted to kill her, strangle her, hear her beg for mercy. And the manâwho was he? What was he? Heâd fought like a madman, but someone not human.
All the months heâd planned on getting even with Jennifer, determined to teach her a lesson. And it had come to this! God! He wanted to kill them both, torture them to death. He pounded his fist on the steering wheel, wincing with pain. His face streaked with tears, his hands sore and bloody, he tried to reach into his pants pocket for a handkerchief. Several tries later, he pulled the handkerchief out and wiped his face and hands.
Get going, get outta here! He shook all over, his teeth chattering. He wanted to puke.
Gritting his teeth, he reached for the car door and struggled to close it. He fought to keep his swollen eyes open, dreading the drive back to his motel. God! How could he make it?
âPerhaps I can help you.â
Bruce jerked his head around. What? A woman sat on the passenger seat, reeking of strong perfume. Where had she come from? Long platinum hair fell past her shoulders, her ears and neck flashing with diamonds. She looked like a damn jewelry store. And her accentâwhere was she from?
Mouth swollen, he could hardly speak, slurring his words. âI ... I didnât see you or hear you. And who the hell are you?â
âIntroductions first. My name is Celestia, and you areâ?â
âBruce. How the hell did you get in the carâ?
âIâve learned to move quickly, one of my many talents.â She bestowed a sly smile on him. âAnd it occurred to me that I might be able to help you.â
âHelp me? How?â Every muscle ached, each word an effort.
âHelp you avenge your, uh, recent misadventure.â
What the hell? âHow do you know about that?â
âOh, I know many things. You might say Iâm omniscient. So back to my original offer. Do you want my help?â
âThe only way you could help me is to get rid of the bitch, and yes, that man, whoever or whatever the hell he is.
